Hi! I’m María Barea, content creator and part of the creative team here in Teenformation. As most of my peers, I am a second-year student of Journalism at Carlos III University in Madrid. Starting this summer I will be studying in San Francisco State University, where I will improve my English and learn about how journalism works in the international sphere.
My main role in the outlet will be creating and updating image and video content for our Instagram page (@teenformation) while keeping in touch with my partners in charge of Twitter and the blog to create a cohesive brand and aesthetic for the whole Teenformation team. Social media will be the most powerful tool to connect crossmedia with our audience and try to drive engagement from online platforms to our web page, where we will develop our articles.
I practically learnt how to fluently speak before I learnt to walk, and from the age of four I have been an avid reader.
I used to be the child that wrote essays for fun and dove deep into obscure topics at 3 AM just for the sake of learning, so naturally journalism was my number one choice when it came to choosing a university degree. One of my biggest sources of inspiration and support that led me to this path was my English teacher in Bachillerato. It is her who taught me the power of words in journalism and how we can fight misinformation from our own homes. She allowed me to develop my most creative side in her classes and find my passion.
Even though I love the writing aspect of journalism, as of today my career projects are centered around digital communication, publicity and press. Of course, as a young woman I spend long hours online, both producing and consuming content. I believe this is not a weakness but a strength, as I am well aware of how the internet works and what users want and need. Teenformation will hopefully be the place where I can learn my future profession by involving myself first-hand in the development of our media and diving right into what is important: accessible and reliable journalism that speaks young people’s language.
The importance of online journalism was clear since the moment it appeared into our lives. It has quickly surpassed traditional media and now the vast majority of readers rely on social media and online newspapers for their daily dose of news.
As journalists it is our duty to stay up to date with new platforms that can be used to better inform our fellow citizens.
It is only in that way that we can create a well-informed generation, and foster media literacy and the free development of opinions in democracy.
