In the era of technology news are pretty much everywhere. From turning on the TV during lunch, to checking our emails and social media, or listening to the radio on our drive to school, a surge of information creeps into our brains.
Still, the importance of actively seeking this information remains, and so, striving to understand and read about current affairs should be a priority for everyone.
Today, more than ever it is crucial to stay engaged and connected with the world around us and the internet provides us with tools to do so. Coming up, I will share my chosen digital newspapers to check on a daily basis and what I like about them.
My preferred outlet for international news has always been The New York Times. So much so that I pay for their subscription to be able to read limitlessly. Every morning at 7:00AM my “Morning Briefing” arrives to my mailbox including the most important news of the day, which I make sure to check while still in bed... Being one of the major newspapers in the world, I consider it an every day must read. What I appreciate the most about the outlet is their breadth of coverage for general news. Additionally, I consider the outlet does not have any weak points at the time of transmitting information, meaning they are able to cover all topics of human interest in a very extensive way. Not only do I enjoy checking out the more traditional sections of the newspaper, such as politics and business news or tech commentaries, but I have also found very interesting pieces of writing relating to science, arts or style. I don’t think any other paper can give you this much value and for that it remains my safe choice. Besides, I consider the Times’ to be at the forefront of digital journalism, having improved their online presence and developed a wonderful app in past years and starting to experiment more and more with video journalism, data and podcasting.
Regarding national media, I find myself often reading El País. This is my preferred Spanish newspaper for its quality of content and writing. Truth is I’ve had some issues while reading Spanish media, most of them stemming from the large and noticeable presence of the editorial line in what is published, which makes news lose their impartiality and objectiveness. However, I feel like my political ideas somewhat align with those of El País, making the reading of news more tolerable.
Lastly, I had to mention Business of Fashion as my top site for fashion industry news. They produce good content with really up to date information on what is happening inside the fashion sphere and they seem to be keen on including as many perspectives as possible while doing so. BoF also provides insights into many different areas of the industry, which other renowned fashion magazines and outlets lack. I like this because it breaks the stigma that fashion is just “shallow clothes, looks & trends”, giving depth to their subjects and showing how the fashion industry is as complex and intricate as other industries that move the world. Like they themselves claim, their goal is to “fill the void for an informed analytical and opinionated point of view on the fashion business”, that is, to provide readers a profound understanding of the trends, tactics and techniques in fashion, through research and analysis of the current and forthcoming scenes. And to be honest, that is exactly what they have managed to do. Although it is true that they are a little fixated on reporting about established fashion houses, mainstream brands and high-end businesses only, which I believe deteriorates the idea that fashion is becoming more inclusive to both, new designers and customers. Even so, I consider the platform a one-stop shop for all your industry needs. An even bigger plus is that they have a section in which they list available jobs inside the company and industry, having hired through it many young reporters to join their team, which, not gonna lie, is one of my dreams!
